Mike DeLano, 59, tragically passed while mowing at Brigg’s Park, Grand Rapids, when his lawnmower tipped over a retaining wall, pinning him beneath. Despite rescue attempts by witnesses and first responders, they were unable to save him.

DeLano, remembered as a kind man, was laid to rest on September 26. A procession of Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) team members paid tribute to his life and expressed support for his family. DeLano, who worked for GRPS for nearly two years, is remembered as a dedicated staff member.

“Mike was a man who would do anything for anyone, always smiling and giving 100% every day,” said his supervisor, Brad Bennett. “He was proud of his work, especially mowing. Mike was the kind of person everyone loved.”

John Schutz, a painter on the GRPS facilities team, echoed this sentiment, “Mike was always in a good mood and made you believe this was the best job he ever had. He was extremely proud to work here.”
