TL/DR –
Texas and Louisiana are expected to experience flash flooding due to up to 9 inches of rain in the next 24 hours. These areas have already seen over 600% of their normal rainfall in the past two weeks. Flash flooding could be life-threatening and rainfall rates could top 2 inches per hour.
Texas and Louisiana face ‘High Risk’ Flash Flooding Warning
A rare “high risk” warning for flash flooding is in effect for Texas and Louisiana, with predictions of up to 9 inches of rain in the next 24 hours. The already saturated high-risk area has seen over 600% of their normal rainfall for the past two weeks, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA).
Flash flooding under these conditions could be life-threatening. “High risk” days, despite accounting only for 4% of days, are responsible for more than one-third of flooding deaths, reports the Weather Prediction Center.
Rainfall rates could reach up to 2 inches per hour. The storms will initiate in Texas on Thursday afternoon, with the heaviest rain expected from Dallas to Waco. Additional risks include damaging winds, large hail, and potential tornadoes.
The severe flash flooding is predicted for overnight, targeting eastern Texas and western Louisiana.
Storms to Continue Eastward
On Friday morning, the line of storms will proceed east, bringing the threat of flooding to Louisiana, southern Mississippi, and Alabama. By Friday afternoon and evening, another round of severe storms will develop from New Orleans to Birmingham.
