TL/DR –
A recall attempt against Wisconsin’s longest-serving Assembly Speaker, Robin Vos, failed due to insufficient signatures gathered from residents in the district Vos was elected in, according to the state elections commission. The attempt was led by supporters of former President Donald Trump, who were unhappy with Vos’s criticism of Trump and refusal to undo the 2020 Wisconsin presidential election. The state’s legislative maps have since changed, which may complicate the final count of signatures and the Elections Commission plans to conduct a second review of signatures based on the old and new electoral maps.
Failed Recall Attempt Against Wisconsin’s Assembly Speaker
A recall attempt against Wisconsin’s longest-serving Assembly Speaker, Robin Vos, fell short as organizers failed to gather enough signatures. This information is based on an initial review by the state elections commission.
Supporters of former President Donald Trump sought to remove Assembly Speaker Robin Vos due to his criticism of Trump and refusal to undo the 2020 Wisconsin presidential election.
Despite the recall organizer Matthew Snorek’s claim of submitting over 10,000 signatures, the Wisconsin Elections Commission found that they were about 945 signatures short from residents in the district Vos represents.
However, recent changes to the state’s legislative maps may create complications for the final signature count. The state Supreme Court declined to clarify whether these new districts apply to elections held before November, leaving questions about the proposed recall.
The Elections Commission will conduct a second review of signatures and determine the number of valid signatures under both old and new electoral maps. The commission also plans to ask Attorney General Josh Kaul for clarification from the state Supreme Court on which district boundaries to use for the recall election.
Wisconsin Elections Commission chairman Don Millis revealed that WEC administrator Meagan Wolfe decided to stay out of the signature counting process due to the group’s focus on her role in the 2020 election. Despite facing criticism from his own party, Vos has remained firm in his rejection of calls to decertify the 2020 election.
The recall attempt follows a campaign by a Racine County-based group, threatening to unseat Vos if he did not advance impeachment against Wolfe, an effort Vos has blocked.
