Kari Lake Calls for Abortion Debate: Lake ’22 vs Lake ’24

TL/DR –

Kari Lake, a political figure in Arizona, has been accused of shifting her stance on abortion multiple times. She has been avoiding a debate on abortion with Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, while challenging Ruben Gallego to do the same. Lake has variously called abortion “almost demonic,” supported the 1864 near-total abortion ban, called for the ban’s repeal, and then lamented that the ban wouldn’t be enforced, causing confusion over her actual stance.

Kari Lake Claims Ruben Gallego is Dodging Abortion Debate

Kari Lake accuses Ruben Gallego of avoiding a debate on abortion. Lake is gaining traction in social and conservative media by criticizing Gallego, a Marine veteran, for not being able to “man up” and debate her on this sensitive issue, her campaign said.

In contrast, Lake seems to dismiss Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb’sinvitation to debate on abortion, even though Republican voters will make a choice in the July 30 primary.

Lake’s Inconsistent Views on Abortion

Lake’s stance on abortion is unclear. She has both condemned abortion as “almost demonic” and celebrated the 1864 near-total abortion ban. Yet, she has also called for the repeal of that same law, flipping her stance yet again.

While Lamb has consistently been pro-life and Gallego a supporter of abortion rights, Lake’s positions seem to fluctuate depending on her campaign needs.

In February 2022, she supported the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade to reinstate the 1864 law. However, when the law was reinstated in April, she quickly opposed it, calling for retaliation.

Lake’s Changing ‘Pro-Life’ Stance

Despite claiming to be pro-life and never wavering from this belief, Lake changed her position in response to the reinstatement of the 1864 law. By April 11, Lake seemed to support a woman’s right to choose.

However, Lake told the Idaho Dispatch that the near-total ban on abortion would not be enforced, contradicting her previous statements.

Lake’s Current Position on Abortion

Lake now believes that exceptions for abortion should be made in cases of rape, incest, and the danger to a mother’s life. Given her fluctuating views, it seems Lake’s primary concern is her own political survival.
