Kari Lake Stands Up for Jan 6 Participants in Senate Race

TL/DR –

Senate candidate Kari Lake has repeatedly shown support for participants in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S Capitol, suggesting that their prosecution is politically motivated. Despite advice from national Republicans to move on from past grievances, Lake has continued to defend these participants, referring to those prosecuted as “political prisoners.” Her continuous allegation that recent elections were rigged has led some national Republicans to be skeptical of her candidacy.

Senate Candidate Kari Lake Supports Jan. 6 Attack Participants

Kari Lake, a Senate candidate, has recently expressed support and sympathy for the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack participants. Lake, like some Republicans, believes the prosecution of these participants is politically motivated, despite substantial evidence and court verdicts indicating legal violations.

During her 2022 governor’s run, Lake defended a man who was sentenced to three years of probation for encouraging others to enter the Capitol building and seize a police officer’s shield.

Lake’s defense of Jan. 6 participants continues during her Senate run, despite advice from national Republicans to move on from “past grievances”. Her campaign remained silent when asked for comments.

On Fox News, Lake defended those prosecuted for their involvement in the Jan. 6 riot, referring to them as “political prisoners”. She specifically supported a participant who was seen assaulting police officers in court documents.

Following the release of Owen Shroyer, another Jan. 6 participant, from prison, Lake posted in support. Shroyer, who spread misinformation about the 2020 election, was sentenced to a two-month prison term.

Lake’s campaign retweeted a picture of her with Jenna Ryan, another Jan. 6 participant who served a two-month prison sentence. The post caught the attention of Jacob Chansley, the ‘QAnon shaman’, who expressed an interest in running for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District.

However, Lake’s constant assertions of election fraud have made national Republicans doubtful of her candidacy. Sen. Steve Daines, the National Republican Senatorial Committee chair, advised Lake to focus on the future instead.
