Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego Endorses Ex-Husband for US Senate

Phoenix Mayor, Kate Gallego, backs her ex-husband, Ruben Gallego, in the race for the U.S. Senate seat from Arizona in 2024, the campaign announced.

In a statement shared with The Arizona Republic, Phoenix’s mayor praised Gallego, an Arizona Democrat in Congress, for his commitment to a better future for Arizona.

“I am proud to endorse Ruben because of his dedication to fighting for working families and the most vulnerable. He will do an excellent job working for all of us as our next senator,” wrote the Phoenix mayor.

The Senate candidate wrote, “In addition to being an incredible leader in our community, Kate is the best mother our son could ask for and I am truly honored to have her support.”

The Gallegos married in 2010 and announced their separation in December 2016. Their son, Michael, was born in early 2017.

Ruben Gallego is now the presumptive Democratic candidate in the race. His main Republican rival is Kari Lake, an ally of former President Donald Trump and failed gubernatorial candidate who rose to fame by sowing doubts about the integrity of U.S. elections.

Lake has tried to use Gallego’s first marriage against him in recent weeks, pointing out that he left his ex-wife just before she gave birth to their son.

The current Senator Kyrsten Sinema, who last year changed her official party affiliation from Democrat to independent, has not yet announced whether she will run for re-election. If so, a historic three-way race would be set in 2024.

Shortly after Sinema changed her party affiliation, there were speculations that Kate Gallego would launch her candidacy for the Senate seat, but she later told the media that she had no plans to run.

The race is closely watched nationwide as it is one of several that will decide the partisan tilt of the U.S. Senate.
