A man from Belleville has been arrested after breaking into a water treatment plant in Sylvan Township, Michigan, causing significant damage, according to Michigan State Police.
At around 7 a.m. on Monday, MSP troopers responded to a call from plant employees reporting a break-in at the facility located on Old US 12 Road. Upon arrival, a 33-year-old suspect was spotted exiting the building and was promptly apprehended.
Troopers discovered tampering with the plant’s controls and signs of an attempt to damage the infrastructure during their assessment of the crime scene. The suspect had breached the premises by cutting through a barbed wire fence, then proceeded to spray-paint windows, likely to obscure view from potential witnesses, and constructed a makeshift bed within the facility.
Following his arrest, the suspect was transported to Washtenaw County Jail. In the meantime, residents of Sylvan Township are urged not to consume water from the facility until authorities have completed thorough testing.
