Marquette Ed Board Decides New School Nickname

TL/DR –

The Marquette Area Public Schools’ Board of Education has voted to name the school’s new mascot “Sentinels,” six months after abolishing the previous “Redmen/Redettes” nickname. The selection process involved public input, board discussion, and student advisory boards. The final three choices were “Red Jackets,” “Reds,” and “Sentinels,” with “Sentinels” chosen in a 6-1 vote.

Marquette Schools Choose Sentinels as New Mascot

Following a six-month period without a nickname or mascot, Marquette Area Public Schools’ Board of Education has approved “Sentinels” as their new moniker.

The board, last summer, cast a 4-3 vote to retire the old Marquette Senior High School Redmen/Redettes nicknames, thereby initiating the rebranding process. The decision-making process involved public opinions, board discussions, and recommendations from student advisory boards.

On January 8, eight names made the final cut: Cardinals, Hawks, Marauders, Reds, Redtail Hawks, Red Hawks, Red Jackets, and Sentinels. By January 16, the list was narrowed down to three: Red Jackets, Reds, and Sentinels.

The name Sentinels was ultimately chosen as the new nickname with a 6-1 vote on Monday.
