Downtown Raleigh Engulfed in Crimson and Cream by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
Downtown Raleigh was awash in crimson and cream over the weekend as over 3,000 members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated convened at the Raleigh convention center for their regional conference.
Members from North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, and Bermuda came together to celebrate the accomplishments of their respective chapters and focus on internal development and social action programs.
The conference aimed to motivate participants to return to their communities and carry out service activities, including helping build Habitat for Humanity houses. Elsie Cooke-Holmes, International President of the sorority, emphasized their dedication to scholarships and youth programs and their critical involvement in the 2024 election year’s social justice agenda.
In Raleigh, the sorority honored one of its founders, Jimmie Bugg Middleton. Born in Virginia, Middleton made Raleigh her home and was instrumental in the Women’s Suffrage March in 1913. She also helped charter the local Raleigh chapter of the sorority. The sorority members commemorated her contributions by sponsoring and dedicating a grave marker at her burial site.
