Navajo Artistry: Rug & Jewelry Exhibition Returns to Scottsdale

The Adopt-a-Native-Elder Program is holding its second annual Scottsdale Navajo Rug & Jewelry Show at the Holland Community Center, 34250 N. 60th St., from Feb. 16-18. The show boasts over 200 traditional Navajo rugs, jewelry, and crafts, along with weaving demos, cultural teachings, raffles, and stories.

Purchasers can get unique items and learn more about Native culture. The event kicks off with a VIP preview and sale on Friday, Feb. 16, from 5-8 p.m., giving the public an early chance to buy rugs and other handcrafted items. The show continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17-18. Entry is free and all rug sales proceeds go directly to the weavers.

Friday VIP Event Features Weaver Talks, Music, and Refreshments

The Friday VIP event includes talks by weavers about their rugs, Native music, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks. Tickets are $50 at the door or from hollandcenter.org, and include a raffle ticket for a handwoven rug.

This year’s show features Nellie Curley, known for embedding cultural teachings in her rugs. Curley’s weavings depict the creation story of her homelands and various Navajo ceremonies. Attendees can buy several of her rugs and meet the weavers and artisans at weaving demos.
