NRI Claims Return to India ‘Cured’ Him, Criticizes US Healthcare System in Viral Post

TL/DR –

A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) who lived in the US for a decade claimed that returning to India “cured” him, according to a viral social media post. The NRI criticized the American healthcare system for prioritizing profits over patients and being diagnosed with schizophrenia, which he later found out to be a misdiagnosis. The post gained traction online, with many lauding the NRI for his decision to return to India, citing the steep healthcare costs in the US.

An Indian expatriate in the US credits his return to India for his health recovery

An Indian expatriate who spent a decade in the United States credits his return to India for curing his health issues, exposing the profit-driven American healthcare system in a viral Reddit post. He expressed gratitude for his homecoming and criticized the US healthcare for treating individuals as “money-making machines”.

“I spent 10 years in America. While they were amazing for my education and career, I missed home and my family,” the user explained in his Reddit post.

He experienced the flaws of the American healthcare system firsthand when he developed health issues in 2017 while working as a staff data scientist.

According to him, the US healthcare system creates unnecessary anxiety with complex medical terms. He was initially diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in 2018 but questioned the validity of the American doctors’ opinion.

“If I still had schizophrenia, there is no way I could’ve done a degree and a job,” he wrote. He consulted a leading psychiatrist at NIMHANS in Bangalore, India, who reassured him that his schizoaffective disorder was in remission and he had a mood disorder and occasional anxiety.

“I moved back to India last year. I have been cured. Yet nothing has changed. Just access to a healthcare system and doctors that care, and do not see me as a money-making machine,” he declared.

His post has sparked discussions on social media, with most netizens lauding his decision to return to India and highlighting the high healthcare costs in the US.

Some users shared similar experiences, stating, “India genuinely has some of the best healthcare in the world,” and “Moving to US changes the gut microbiome which causes all sorts of issues from immunity to mood disorders.”

Another user expressed satisfaction with the healthcare received during childbirth in India. Likewise, a couple who had been living in the US for 17 years cited high healthcare costs as their reason for moving back to India. They stated, “For us, that was $14,000 out of pocket on top of monthly premiums,” in an Instagram post.

Without a support system and escalating costs, moving to India was their solution for accessible healthcare.
