TL/DR –
Mark Robinson, North Carolina’s GOP candidate for governor, energized supporters at the state party’s convention with a speech denouncing media coverage of Donald Trump’s trials and the “failures of the Democratic Party.” Robinson, whose political style has won the endorsement of Trump, outlined his vision for North Carolina, focusing on improving the economy and education. Criticism of Robinson centers around his views on the LGBTQ community and abortion access, though he maintains he can separate his personal beliefs from his public office role.
Mark Robinson’s Vision for North Carolina’s Future
At the recent NCGOP Convention, Mark Robinson, North Carolina’s GOP gubernatorial candidate, delivered an impassioned speech. Other state candidates made sure to fire up the crowd by endorsing Robinson’s campaign even before he took the stage.
Robinson, the state’s lieutenant governor, criticized media for over-emphasizing Donald Trump’s legal troubles at the convention’s Old North State Dinner. He claimed more attention should be on the “Democratic Party’s failures” instead. His speech outlined his vision for the state, focusing on improving the economy and education.
“There are enough talented people in this state who share our vision that we can make this a reality” Robinson commented, in a speech livestreamed by WGHP.
The 55-year-old is locked in one of the fiercest gubernatorial races of the 2024 election, against his Democratic rival, state Attorney General Josh Stein. Robinson’s bold political style appeals to Trump’s base, leading to a formal endorsement from the former president in March at a Greensboro rally.
However, Robinson’s comments on the LGBTQ community and limiting abortion access have sparked criticism. He has maintained that he can separate his religious beliefs from his public duties.
Positioning himself as “part of the winning team”, Robinson attributed North Carolina’s economic prosperity to Republican policies. He implied his governorship would ensure the state’s continued success.
“North Carolina is on the cusp of an economic explosion,” he said, “we need to guide that explosion in the right direction and improve this state further.”
Education is another priority for Robinson. He believes North Carolina’s education system is “in shambles”, but absolves teachers of blame, equating them with law enforcement officers.
North Dakota Gov. Burgum, a keynote speaker at the dinner, began his address by calling Robinson North Carolina’s future governor.
North Carolina’s importance in the 2024 election was also emphasized by the Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump and her husband, Eric Trump, affirming that the state could “determine the actual direction of our entire country.”
