“Being a role model for my community and family is a profound honor,” shared South Alabama medical student Cya Johnson. This sentiment echoed throughout the Mitchell Center, where 70 medical students received their much-anticipated residency placements.
In the momentous Match Day ceremony, students, surrounded by family and loved ones, discover their next step in the medical journey through a small, sealed envelope. The tension and excitement in the room were palpable as future doctors unraveled their career paths, and for many, their dreams became reality.
Asked about advice for students aspiring to reach this milestone, medical student Connor Posey, aka “Connor”, stated, “It’s worth the struggle. There will be tough days, even thoughts of quitting, but it’s always worth it in the end.”
Connor was also the lucky recipient of the South Alabama tradition – the Match Day pot of money. Each student contributes $5 to a pot, and the last name drawn wins the sum. “When called up, you announce your name and the name of the next person. The last person called wins the pot,” described Posey.
Posey’s winnings may come in handy for University of Tennessee merch, as he moves to the Chattanooga branch for his residency.
University of Tennessee is one of the many nation-wide locations where students have secured residencies.
But at its core, Match Day signifies more than just excitement. It’s an opportunity for future doctors to make a significant impact on people’s lives. “The moment is emotional—realizing your future is suddenly tangible,” expressed Madison Hogan, who celebrated securing her first choice residency at Cincinnati.
