Ohio Police Officer Ambushed, Killed During Disturbance Call
Over the weekend, a police officer from Euclid, Ohio was fatally shot while responding to a disturbance call. The officer, identified as Jacob Derbin, was reportedly ambushed by a gunman. The suspect is still being sought by multiple law enforcement agencies.
Officers from the Cleveland suburb had been dispatched to a home just before 10 p.m. on Saturday after receiving reports of a disturbance. As per WKYC-TV, locals reported hearing about a dozen gunshots.
Derbin was taken to a hospital but didn’t survive the injuries. Ohio’s attorney general, Dave Yost, recognized Derbin’s service and promised that the gunman responsible will be brought to justice. Yost’s office has released images of a 24-year-old suspect and a vehicle of interest online.
“My heart burns with anger at this injustice, for the family of this young officer and the Euclid Police Department,” Yost said. Community members and law enforcement are urged to keep the deceased officer, his family, and the Euclid Police Department in their thoughts.
Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer remembered Derbin as an “amazing human being” with a “great heart” and an “incredible smile.” WJW-TV quoted Meyer saying, “The world’s a better place with him in it.”
Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail expressed “profound sorrow and disbelief”, urging the community to come together in support and solidarity.
