Teen Tourists Stabbed on Christmas Day at Grand Central: Hate Crime Charges Filed

Man Charged with Hate Crimes in Stabbing at New York’s Grand Central Terminal

A man, identified as Steven Hutcherson, was arrested and charged with hate crimes after stabbing two teenage tourists at the Grand Central Terminal in New York City on Christmas Day. The victims, aged 14 and 16, were dining with their parents when the incident occurred around 11:25 a.m.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) police stated that the girls’ injuries were non-life-threatening. According to the bail application, Hutcherson, 36, of the Bronx, expressed anti-white sentiments towards the staff and other diners before the attack.

Unprovoked, Hutcherson stabbed the 16-year-old in the back after approaching their table. As the family tried to escape, he also stabbed the 14-year-old in the thigh. Hutcherson was apprehended swiftly by nearby officers without further incident, according to MTA police.

Charges against Hutcherson include second-degree attempted murder, first and second-degree assault, and first-degree attempted assault, all as hate crimes, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. He is also charged with child endangerment.

The victims, who were visiting New York City during the holidays, were dining at the Tartinery Cafe Bar, per sources at NBC New York. They were both taken to Bellevue Hospital following the attack, and the elder has a collapsed lung.

The manager of Tartinery noted the suspect was displaying erratic behavior prior to the stabbing. Hutcherson, who also goes by the name Esteban Esono-Asue, has a lengthy criminal record including two felony convictions and nine misdemeanor convictions, and multiple ongoing cases for other offenses.

Hutcherson is due to appear in court this Friday.
