Wisconsin charges three men with felony forgery in ‘fake electors scheme’
Three men have been charged in Wisconsin for their involvement in the fake electors scheme aiming to keep former President Donald Trump in office after his 2020 election defeat, according to court records.
Those charged on Tuesday include Trump campaign’s Election Day operations head Mike Roman and Kenneth Chesebro, who agreed to a plea deal in a separate 2020 election case in Georgia. James Troupis, ex-judge and Trump campaign lawyer, was also charged.
All three men face felony forgery charges for their part in mobilizing a pro-Trump elector group to fraudulently attest Trump’s Wisconsin win in the 2020 election. Similar fake elector groups were set up in other states, leading to charges in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, and Georgia.
Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, who brought the case to court, did not immediately comment on the charges.
Charging documents reveal Troupis and Chesebro met with Trump in the Oval Office on Dec. 16, 2020. Later, they discussed delaying Congress’ certification of the Electoral College results by having then-Vice President Pence decline to verify the results from Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Prosecutors cited a message from Chesebro indicating Mike Roman was responsible for delivering the fake elector slates to Congress. A law student met Chesebro in Washington on Jan. 5 to assist with the task.
The fake electors scheme is central to charges special counsel Jack Smith brought against Trump in federal court in Washington, D.C. The ongoing case, presided over by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, hinges on the Supreme Court’s decision on Trump’s claimed immunity from prosecution.
Chesebro and Troupis previously settled a lawsuit related to the fake electors, with neither admitting any liability. The released documents shed more light on the scheme, and 10 fake Wisconsin electors admitted in December that President Joe Biden won the state in 2020.
