Support Group Highlights Safe Spaces for Mental Health
The Phoenix Project, a social initiative in Ipswich, has been drawing attention to community “safe spaces” for individuals dealing with mental health issues. The project’s club meets every Friday at the Quaker Meeting House on Fonnereau Road, providing activities, lunch, and a platform for open discussion.
According to Tracy and Paul, members of the club, it’s vital to identify welcoming spaces in the community, particularly for those struggling with anxiety, stress, or other mental health problems. In Suffolk, over 106,250 residents aged 16 or over were reported to have experienced at least one common mental health issue in 2020, including generalised anxiety disorder, depressive episodes, and phobias.
Mental Health Awareness Week: Spotlight on Safe Spaces
In commemoration of Mental Health Awareness Week, Phoenix Project showcased some of their favorite spots, starting with the Geek Retreat, a gaming shop and social center. Established a decade ago, the franchise offers food, games, and a space to relax.
Sharon Lockhart, manager of the Ipswich branch, says that activities help to alleviate the pressure of discussing personal issues. “Post-pandemic, it was crucial to recreate a friendly, safe environment, especially in a town center like Ipswich.”, said Ms Lockhart.
Community Initiatives Supporting Mental Health
The Coffee Crawl is a social group that meets at a different venue each Wednesday for a casual catch-up over coffee. Another entity, ActivLives, is a community garden and physical health project that espouses the mental health benefits of green activity and being outdoors.
The Hive, a cultural community center on Norwich Road, offers a variety of free social initiatives, including language groups, arts and crafts, and garden projects. The Phoenix group is also discussing creating a leaflet to highlight other mental health safe spaces in town.
