Unique Asheville Drummers: Discover the Magic

TL/DR –

Contemporary Americana painter Philip DeAngelo, who runs a studio in the River Arts District, was visited by Michael Cartellone, drummer of the iconic rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Cartellone, who has been painting since childhood and often incorporates his musical life into his art, admired DeAngelo’s work and made contact for a discussion on their shared interest. The two have now collaborated on a joint exhibition, “Bella Italia”, that will focus on their shared love of Italy and its culture.

Philip DeAngelo’s studio in the River Arts District often attracts visitors, but a rock star guest was a first.

Last February, Michael Cartellone, drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd since 1999 and former Damn Yankees drummer, walked in. Cartellone isn’t just a musician. He’s a painter, too, since attending the Cleveland Institute of Art as a child.

After portraying Mr. Peanut in sunny yellows and inky blacks, Cartellone continued painting during his high-powered rock career.

When Cartellone saw DeAngelo’s art, a connection was made. “He reached out later to connect on our shared love of art,” says DeAngelo.

During their conversations, they discovered shared Sicilian ancestry.

The Bella Italia duo show, opening late May, will feature works by both artists. “Our paintings will focus on our shared love of Italy and its culture,” DeAngelo adds.

Though they paint similar subjects, their styles contrast. Cartellone is a realist painter, influenced by Pop Art. DeAngelo paints color-drenched landscapes with simple charm.

Despite their differences, both artists have a knack for transporting the viewer, suggests Cartellone.

“Michael’s drumming is exceptional,” says DeAngelo, who recently watched a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert. “I spent most of my time watching him.”

Bella Italia: Works by Michael Cartellone and Philip DeAngelo opens Saturday, May 25, 10am-4pm at Philip DeAngelo Studio (115 Roberts St., Asheville). The show ends Saturday, June 8. For more, visit philipdeangeloart.com.
