The Wake County Animal Center, following an eight-week hiatus due to a canine influenza outbreak, will recommence pet adoptions. Beginning with cat adoptions on December 4, and dog adoptions from December 5. The shelter shut down on October 6, after the outbreak and subsequent death of three dogs.
During the height of the canine influenza outbreak, up to 78 dogs showed symptoms and four died. However, since November 13, no new cases have been detected, and over 100 healthy dogs are now available for adoption.
While the Center will not yet open for public browsing, potential adopters can schedule appointments to meet pets viewed in the online gallery at pets.wake.gov/.
Owner-surrendered pets and public-found strays are not currently being accepted. The center anticipates resuming stray collections and intake by appointment on January 2.
