Walgreens Expands Innovative Pharmacy Solutions with New Micro-Fulfillment Center in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota

Walgreens has announced the opening of a cutting-edge micro-fulfillment center (MFC) in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. The MFC will streamline prescription processing and decrease administrative tasks, allowing pharmacists to devote more time to delivering personalized care to their patients. This new facility will support nearly 200 Walgreens stores across the Midwest, including 145 in Minnesota. It is projected to process around 13 million prescriptions annually, offering over 175 employment opportunities and generating significant payroll and property tax revenue for the state and county.

Micro-Fulfillment Centers Catering to Emerging Pharmacy Needs

Rick Gates, Walgreens’ Chief Pharmacy Officer, expressed that the investment in micro-fulfillment centers is a strategic move towards a future where community pharmacies play a bigger role in healthcare. With research indicating an increasing demand for health services at local pharmacies, MFCs enable pharmacists to spend more time with patients. Micro-fulfillment centers utilize innovative, robotic technology to dispense and ship prescriptions to Walgreens’ locations nationwide more efficiently.

Currently, Walgreens operates a network of 12 micro-fulfillment centers that support over 5,000 stores across the country, fulfilling more than 3.5 million prescriptions weekly. These centers have led to a 24% year-over-year increase in shipped volumes, with roughly 16 million prescriptions filled each month. Furthermore, about 40% of a store’s total prescription volume is managed by MFCs at locations serviced by these facilities. This allows pharmacists more time to administer immunizations and provide other patient services.

Kayla Heffington, Vice President of Pharmacy Operating Model at Walgreens, explained that pharmacists working in locations supported by MFCs can dedicate more time to patient care, such as providing medication adherence support or administering vaccines. The result is a strengthened community health and an improved patient experience.
