Based on data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it is estimated that 2 million high school athletes sustain injuries annually in the U.S. while playing or practicing. However, a sports training program in Rochester is making strides in helping young athletes stay fit and healthy.
Overcoming Sports Injuries: The Journey of a Lacrosse Player
Consider the journey of Carley Shapiro, a high school lacrosse player, who is growing stronger each day after recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The recovery and rehab of her knee took her nine months following the injury she sustained during a game.
“It was like a freak accident on the field,” shares Shapiro, a senior at Brighton High School. “Following surgery, I had to ensure that my knee regained its strength.”
The Role of Fitness Programs in Injury Recovery and Prevention
Shapiro’s rehabilitation involves training at the UR Medicine Fitness Science gym. Here, Conner Lorenzo manages a program that assists young athletes like Shapiro not only in their recovery but also in preventing future injuries.
“A well-structured strength conditioning program can significantly reduce injury risks,” says Lorenzo, the director of UR Fitness Science. “Although we can’t eliminate all risks, we can decrease the likelihood of certain types of injuries.”
Individualized Workouts for Athletes
Post-injury, Shapiro took a year to feel confident again on the lacrosse field. Thanks to the program at UR Medicine Fitness Science, athletes like her receive workouts that are tailored to their individual strengths and weaknesses.
“The challenge was mainly mental for me, as my nature is to always keep going,” she says. “I had to slow down and virtually start from scratch. But with patience, I regained my speed and strength.”
The Impact of Fitness Science on Athletic Performance
Data indicates that fitness science programs are having a positive impact. Young athletes who participated in the UR Medicine Fitness Science program showed an average 13% improvement in athletic performance measures over a school year. This suggests they’re not only stronger and faster, but also less prone to injuries.
“Education on proper movement significantly reduces injury risk,” emphasizes Lorenzo.
Looking Ahead: Future in Lacrosse
With high school ending, Shapiro is set to play lacrosse at Hobart. She credits fitness science for giving her an advantage. “There’s a noticeable impact on the field. My strength has improved since I began attending this program,” she notes.
