Elite Human Performance Specialists Converge at H2F Symposium

Holistic Health and Fitness Symposium: Empowering U.S. Army Performance

At the Hampton Roads Convention Center, the annual Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) Symposium convened from May 12th to May 14th. This gathering brought together U.S. Army leaders, international partners, academics, and industry experts. The focus of the symposium was on the revolutionary H2F system, a groundbreaking approach to soldier preparation for modern warfare.

Who Attended the Holistic Health and Fitness Symposium?

The event welcomed over 1,100 registered attendees, including 35 international partners, and more than 60 vendors specializing in human performance. Together, they explored the future of human performance and the effectiveness of the Army’s innovative H2F system.

In-Depth Presentations and Breakout Sessions

Broad-ranging presentations were given by leaders from the Department of War spanning all three components, H2F domain experts, and representatives from industry and academia. In addition, the symposium featured breakout sessions focusing on the five H2F readiness domains: physical, mental, nutritional, spiritual, and sleep readiness.

Keynote Speakers on Warfighter Performance Optimization

The event was highlighted by speeches from the 17th Sgt. Maj. of the Army, Michael Weimer, and the 20th Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps, Carlos Ruiz. Both emphasized the critical importance of leaders modeling Warfighter Performance Optimization to further enhance the Department of War’s fighting capabilities as a Joint Force.

“Our mission is to help our Soldiers perform their best under cognitive load, demonstrate resilience, control their heart rate, and make data-informed decisions for the next fight”, SMA Weimer elaborated. “H2F is a direct investment in our warfighters’ ability to make the best decisions in life and death situations.”

Expressing the need for higher standards for the next generation of warfare, SMMC Ruiz urged, “Leaders from industry and academia, your insights and expertise are crucial in building the next generation of lethal Marines and Soldiers”.

Warfighter Performance Optimization Across the Joint Force

Insights on how the Department of War emphasizes warfighter performance optimization across the Joint Force were shared by Mr. Peter Belk, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for Readiness. His focus rested on treating our nation’s warfighters as a readiness capability, ensuring our ability to win any battle whether on land, sea, or air.

“We firmly believe that an integrated approach through Total Force Fitness, TFF, will directly improve our most valuable weapon, the human weapons system”, stated Mr. Belk. “The Army has pioneered this policy with the H2F program serving as the living embodiment of this five-domain model”.

Highlighting the Benefits of the H2F Program

Analysis of data from the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) was presented by Dr. Tim Murray, Director of the Data and Decision Sciences Program. His 8-year study covering 43 million Soldier data points revealed significant benefits for those who participated in the H2F program.

  • Providing every Army Brigade with H2F resources could save the American taxpayer between $93-164 million in lost duty days since FY21.
  • Female Warfighters recover 27% faster when they participate in the Pregnancy-Postpartum Physical Training Program.
  • Warfighters see an 8.5% increase in qualifying as “expert” in their M4 qualifications.

“Soldiers within H2F Brigades are more lethal, ready, and deployable than their counterparts,” explained Dr. Murray. “If H2F were across every Brigade, within the Army, it would directly create a force more ready to fight and win our nation’s wars”.

Human Performance Optimization in Corporate Settings

As the Army continues to implement H2F, its value has also been recognized in corporate settings. Former Health and Performance Director at Google, Newton Chang, shared how Google’s approach to human performance optimization has boosted productivity and retention.

“At Google, we invested in community leaders whose healthy competition increased our productivity, connectivity, and social connection”, Mr. Chang noted. “This connection in the realm of human performance creates a supportive network for our teams to rely on in challenging times”.

The H2F System’s proven benefits reaffirm the value of investing in the U.S. Army’s most precious resource, the American Soldier. This commitment is a force multiplier that directly enhances a Warfighter’s ability to engage and annihilate the enemy.
