A Taste of Keke Palmer’s Mat Pilates Class
A mat Pilates class with Keke Palmer is exactly what you’d expect – a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with guidance offered in a conversational tone and plenty of laughter thrown in for good measure. Nearly 250 fans got to experience this firsthand at the Salt Shed during the second annual exercise festival, “Move at the Shed”.
Setting the Scene
The ambiance was set with soothing green lighting, complemented by the 33-year-old actress, singer, and host from the stage. Dressed in vibrant pink leggings and a matching top, she regaled the attendees with anecdotes and humor as she guided them through leg stretches, hip rolls, and squats. There was even an impromptu singalong to the tunes from her albums playing softly in the background.
Celebrity Fitness Brands
The Pilates class forms a part of Keke’s latest venture, Practice by Palmer, a digital wellness platform offering workouts, recorded audio messages, and live chats. Palmer, who kickstarted her career in collaboration with Chicago talent agencies, is amongst the growing list of millennial celebrities carving their niche in the fitness industry. Notable amongst these are rapper Gunna with his global Wunna Run Club, ASAP Ferg with his cycling and boot camp classes, and actress/singer Hilary Duff promoting a “stronger, not smaller” campaign for the Ladder workout app.
Pilates for Self-love
Keke Palmer’s brand stands out in its focus on nurturing a sense of community and advocating mental and physical well-being over the societal pressures of being thin. As she candidly shared during a fireside chat with ABC7 anchor Val Warner post her class, “Pilates is really just about being able to be mobile. It’s not about having a six-pack. When you really get deep into your practice, the last thing you’re worried about is how you look. You’re really worried about how you feel.”
Authenticity Wins Over Fans
The attendees were a mix of Palmer’s fans and fitness enthusiasts who connected with her authenticity and relatable persona. Natalie Dowdell, 38, of Ravenswood, described the class as “a good mix” of Keke’s personality and a workout session. “She feels like a friend that you know from home,” Dowdell said. “Anything that she does, I’m like, ‘I gotta check it out.’”
A Personal Journey to Fitness
Keke’s journey into Pilates began post the birth of her son in 2023, but she soon felt the desire to extend its benefits to others. This marked the start of her exploration into how she could be her own Tony Robbins, the well-known motivational speaker. Palmer confessed that she has been on a journey to reconnect with herself, and she hopes to help others do the same. As she discusses in a recent TED Talk, “How I Set Myself Free”, she has made significant progress in steering clear of burnout.
