Avila Chevalier used her victory speech to send a strong message to her supporters and to Espaillat.
“The people in our district have been overlooked for too long and we’ve all felt let down by our government. But that ends today,” she said.
Mamdani praised Avila Chevalier stating that she embodies clarity, conscience, and conviction and is an ideal fit for congressperson.
Espaillat conceded defeat Tuesday night, expressing his love for his supporters. He has held the seat since 2017.
