Despite a decrease in public perception about immigration, it’s still at the forefront of US President Donald Trump‘s administration. An Associated Press-NORC Center survey shows only 39% of US adults approve of Trump’s performance on immigration, down from 49% at the start of his second term.
Republican Support for Trump’s Immigration Policies
Approximately 8 in 10 Republicans remain supportive of Trump’s handling of immigration. This marks a slight dip from the beginning of his second term, but is mostly consistent. They are also more likely to approve of Trump’s handling of immigration than his handling of the economy or Iran.
Public Opinion on Trump’s Deportation Policies
The US public is divided on whether Trump has overstepped his authority with immigration. Approximately half of US adults believe Trump has gone too far in restricting legal immigration, and about 47% say he has exceeded his authority when it comes to deporting immigrants living in the US illegally.
However, a majority of Americans believe that Trump has overstepped his bounds in using traffic stops to find and arrest illegal immigrants. This practice was at the center of 2 recent US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shootings in Maine.
Trump’s Approval Rating on the Economy and Healthcare
About 32% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, down from 40% at the start of his second term. On the contrary, 69% of Republicans approve his handling of the economy.
Regarding healthcare, Trump’s approval ratings remain low with only about 3 in 10 Americans approving. However, he’s seen an increase in approval among Republicans, with 71% now in favor, up from 59% in the previous year.
As Democrats gear up for the midterm elections, they plan to focus on healthcare cuts, the cost of living, and the war in Iran. Trump’s handling of healthcare continues to draw disapproval from Democrats and independents.
