Michigan Senate Nominee Mike Rogers Calls for End to Trump’s Tariff War in New Ad

TL/DR –

Mike Rogers, the Republican nominee for the Senate in Michigan, has called for an end to the trade war with Canada in a new campaign advertisement. Rogers has also claimed that his Democratic rival, Abdul El-Sayed, has plans that would necessitate raising taxes by $3,000, a claim that El-Sayed denies. Despite his criticism of the tariff war, Rogers has defended Trump’s call for the SAVE Act to revamp U.S elections and has distanced himself from Trump on ending the Iran war and slowing down AI development.

Michigan Senate Nominee Rogers Calls on Trump to End Tariff War in New Campaign Ad

Republican Senate nominee for Michigan, Mike Rogers, recently released a campaign ad urging Trump to halt the ongoing tariff war. Rogers underscored the importance of Canada as an ally, not an enemy, in his 30-second advert on X, while enjoying a Labatt, a popular Canadian beer.

He also claimed that his Democrat counterpart, Abdul El-Sayed, plans to hike taxes by $3,000. Even though El-Sayed hasn’t proposed such a plan, Republicans argue that a tax increase is required for his schemes, for instance, “Medicare for All.”

El-Sayed responded on X, accusing Rogers of initially supporting the tariff war, and only changing his stance due to plummeting poll numbers. “Donald is the reason we’re in a trade war. And he’s the reason you’re running. Not a serious person,” El-Sayed retorted.

Meanwhile, the recently imposed duties from last month on $20 billion worth of U.S. products exported to Canada, ranging between 15% and 50%, formed the basis of Roger’s criticism of Trump’s trade policy towards Canada.

The competition between the two candidates is currently a deadlock. Rogers has tried to distance himself from Trump on several issues, including advocating for the conclusion of the Iran war and regulating AI development. However, he has aligned with Trump on other matters, particularly during the Republican primary, specifically backing Trump’s proposed legislation, the SAVE Act, intended to transform U.S. elections.

When questioned about the campaign ad, Trump defended his stance on Canada. “Look, Canada has been ripping off our country for many, many years… We don’t need Canada for anything,” he stated.
