Republican Senate Runoff in Georgia: Mike Collins Wins

Rep. Mike Collins wins the NBC News predicted Republican Senate runoff in Georgia. A high-stakes fight awaits Collins against Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff.

Collins’ victory over former Derek Dooley is a win for President Donald Trump, who endorsed Collins prior to Tuesday’s election. Dooley, endorsed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, failed to secure the nomination.

As Republicans battled for nominations, Ossoff prepared for the contentious race. Georgia is crucial for Democrats in their bid to gain four Senate seats.

Collins, first elected to the House in 2022, is a staunch Trump ally. He is already setting his case against Ossoff, who was elected to the Senate in 2020.

At a rally preceding the primary runoff, Collins claimed Ossoff “doesn’t represent our state or values”. Ossoff countered, labeling Collins “a congressman in office due to his father’s legacy.”

Collins has been a vocal Trump supporter, often highlighting his authorship of the Laken Riley Act during his campaign – a law that drew bipartisan support, including from Ossoff.

Collins, representing a Republican stronghold, has been an ardent Trump supporter. Collins strictly adheres to Trump’s “America First” policies.

Addressing concerns about high costs and Trump’s handling of the economy, Collins suggested the economy would improve. He referred to an agreement to conclude the war with Iran, which has contributed to high gas prices.

Ossoff looks to highlight a House Ethics Committee investigation into whether Collins misused congressional funds. Collins dismissed the allegations as “bogus.”

Despite a heated primary with Dooley, Collins was confident Republicans would unite after the runoff.

Georgia’s Senate race anticipates a tough fight for both parties. Trump won Georgia by just 2 percentage points in 2024, and Biden claimed victory in 2020 by less than half a point.

Ossoff’s campaign has raised over $80 million and had $32 million as of April 29, substantially outpacing Collins, who reportedly raised $4.9 million and had $1.2 million as of May 27.

Despite the funding disparity, Ossoff is confident of a November victory, labeling the GOP contenders as “corrupt political insiders” at a recent rally.
