TL/DR –
Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has returned to campaigning in Texas after a period of sickness. Talarico revealed on September 30 that he was ill with the flu, which led to his prolonged absence from the campaign trail and drew scrutiny from his opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. His absence caused concern among Democrats, with some expressing they would rather have him on the campaign trail.
James Talarico Returns to Campaign Trail After Flu-related Break
James Talarico, a Democratic Senate candidate, is back in Texas campaigning following an enforced break due to flu sickness.
“James Talarico has resumed his public engagements at the Austin City Limits festival,” said campaign spokesman JT Ennis.
Talarico’s return was confirmed by social media posts showing him at the festival on Friday.
Previously, Talarico’s temporary absence from the campaign trail drew attention from his opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, following Talarico’s virtual appearance at a forum due to his illness.
Paxton’s team asked for a current picture of Talarico as confirmation of his wellness. This was further fueled by a satirical post from Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, depicting Talarico’s face on a milk carton with the label “MISSING”.
Talarico’s last public appearance before his illness was on Sept. 26 in Texas. He then visited New York for a private fundraiser before returning to Dallas, his illness becoming apparent during a virtual event with the Hispanic Business Council.
“I was diagnosed with the flu,” Talarico admitted, appearing visibly sick. “I’m my most contagious, I guess shaking too many hands on the campaign trail was a mistake.”
Talarico’s absence during an important period concerned Democrats. One party member involved in the Talarico campaign expressed the need for him to be back on the trail.
