After the announced resignation of U.S. Representative Tony Gonzales, Democrat Katy Padilla Stout confirmed her intention to vie for Texas Congressional District 23 in the upcoming special election.

Gonzales’s resignation came amid allegations of an illicit affair with a staffer who later tragically ended her own life. Gonzales indirectly confessed to the accusations during a right-wing talk show interview. Despite Gonzales framing his resignation as divinely directed, he was already under a congressional ethics probe and faced potential expulsion from Congress.

Californian Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell also resigned, following accusations of sexual misconduct from four women. These resignations keep the power balance in Congress, with Republicans retaining a slim majority.

Given the imminent special elections in California and Texas, Padilla Stout emphasized the impact on the power balance. If California fills their vacancy quickly, the delayed Texas seat might pull down the Republican majority.

Governor Greg Abbott has the responsibility to schedule the Texas special election. He may follow a similar timeline to the replacement of Blake Farenthold, who also resigned due to a sexual harassment scandal. If so, Texan voters could cast their votes as early as June.

Brandon Herrera, the Republican nominee, is also expected to run in the upcoming election. He expressed his determination to advocate for District 23 constituents at the federal level, following the damaging revelations about Gonzales and Swalwell.
