Hundreds of Shops Injured in Violent Protests Across France

France witnessed tumultuous scenes over the weekend as violent elements within peaceful protest crowds targeted public buildings, including luxury retail outlets and supermarkets, and assaulted police officers and vehicles.

Presidential candidate and National Rally leader Marine Le Pen called for tranquility, emphasizing that France must resist normalizing images of its own destruction and chaos. “Expressing a viewpoint should not entail violence, and France’s future should not be shrouded in chaos,” she stated in a video address.

Meanwhile, Jean-Luc Melenchon, the hard-left France Unbowed presidential candidate, insisted that President Macron must address the demands of the protesting high-school students.

In Limoges, the town hall’s clock tower collapsed in a fire, recalling the tragic 2019 blaze at Paris’ Notre Dame cathedral; Mayor Guillaume Guerin criticized the inadequate deployment of national police officers in his city. Following a harrowing experience that left town hall occupants fearing for their lives, Guerin threatened to step down if necessary funds for rebuilding were not allocated.

Economy Minister Roland Lescure assured support for financially impacted business owners on Sunday: “Those responsible for the damage will pay for it, repair it, and face the consequences of their intent to create chaos,” he declared in a statement.

Carrefour’s CEO Alexandre Bompard reported significant losses due to the protests, with 50 shops suffering damage, 20 of which were looted, incurring losses totaling millions of euros.
