“Amazon’s Top Health-Care Boss to Step Down, Amwell Cofounder to Succeed”

TL/DR –

Amazon’s top health-care executive, Neil Lindsay, is stepping down and will be replaced by Dr. Roy Schoenberg, co-founder of telemedicine company Amwell, on July 1. Lindsay, who has been with Amazon for over 15 years and led the company’s health services since 2021, will continue to advise Amazon until the end of the year. Amazon has been striving to break into the U.S. health-care industry, making significant acquisitions such as online pharmacy PillPack and primary care chain One Medical, and launching an AI health tool earlier this year.

Amazon Healthcare Boss Replaced By Telemedicine Company’s Co-founder

Amazon’s chief of healthcare will step down from his role and be replaced by Dr. Roy Schoenberg, the co-founder of Amwell, a renowned telemedicine company, the online retail giant revealed Wednesday.

Neil Lindsay, who has served as senior vice president of Amazon Health Services since 2021, will leave his position and serve as an advisor at Amazon until the end of the year. Schoenberg’s appointment is scheduled for July 1, in a bid to enhance Amazon’s health technology initiatives.

Lindsay, a former leader of Amazon’s Prime subscription business, has played a significant role in the expansion of Amazon’s online pharmacy service and primary care chain One Medical. Schoenberg is expected to bring clinical expertise and experience to Amazon’s healthcare business.

Amazon has had a longstanding interest in revolutionizing the U.S. healthcare sector, making its first significant move in 2018 with the acquisition of online pharmacy PillPack. This transpired into Amazon Pharmacy, its proprietary offering.

The company further acquired One Medical for $3.9 billion in 2023, a significant step providing Amazon with a network of primary clinics and a robust membership base.

Amazon’s attempts in the healthcare space have also included a now-defunct telehealth service and a discontinued line of health and fitness wearables, Halo. The company recently launched an AI health tool for booking appointments and analyzing medical records.

Lindsay’s departure and Schoenberg’s appointment mark the latest in a series of executive shuffles in Amazon’s healthcare unit. One Medical lost its CEO last March, while Amazon’s chief medical officer and VP of healthcare also exited last year.
