In spite of this confusion, the study also found that 90% of caregivers still trust their pediatricians and primary care providers.
Navigating Health Information for Children Amidst Conflicting Sources
Healthcare decisions are becoming a challenge for families due to conflicting information from social media, influencers, and AI chatbots. Akron Children’s hospital conducted a study with 1,002 caregivers, excluding Ohio caregivers, to understand how families use health information to make decisions regarding their children’s welfare.
The study found 27% of caregivers regretted or questioned a healthcare decision, while 20% delayed a decision. Furthermore, 71% felt overwhelmed by the conflicting health information available, and 63% feared making the wrong decision. Despite this, 90% still trusted their pediatricians and primary care providers.
Akron Children’s Hospital’s Initiative to Combat Misinformation
To help families navigate this information overload, Akron Children’s initiated Healthy Info, Healthy Kids. This project aims to provide evidence-based, science-backed information to caregivers through various channels like the hospital’s website, social media, and short physician videos.
The Struggle with Conflicting Health Information
Online platforms often recommend health-related content based on previous interactions, regardless of the accuracy of the information. This leads to 61% of caregivers feeling confused about whom to trust, and 54% doubting their instincts due to conflicting information. To counter this, caregivers try to verify the credibility of information before making decisions, often seeking guidance from their healthcare providers.
Maintaining Trust in Physicians and Hospitals
Despite the confusion arising from conflicting health information, the trust families place in pediatricians and hospitals remains high. Akron Children’s hospital advocates for physicians to lead with truth, maintaining that trust. They plan to keep updating Healthy Info, Healthy Kids with emerging topics and frequently asked questions to provide accurate and timely information as health conversations evolve.
