Governor Roger Wilson appointed Carnahan post the tragic death of her husband and son in a plane crash.

After swearing in January 2001, Carnahan described her service as bittersweet and historic in an interview with CNN.

Serving for almost two years, she held an Armed Services Committee post and ultimately lost in another election.

Born to working-class parents in Washington, DC in 1933, Carnahan graduated from George Washington University and had four kids with husband, A.S.J. Carnahan.
