TL/DR –

A USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll shows President Joe Biden losing support within key parts of the Democratic base, narrowing trailing Donald Trump, the likely Republican nominee, 39%-37%. Biden now only has the support of 63% of Black voters, a significant drop from the 87% he carried in 2020. Among Hispanic voters, he trails Trump by 5 percentage points, 39%-34%; a drastic change from 2020, where he led Trump 65%-32%.

President Biden’s Challenges in the Election Year

President Joe Biden faces difficulty in gaining the support of essential Democratic demographics as Donald Trump leads among Hispanic and younger voters. Additionally, 20% of Black voters say they’ll support a third-party candidate.

A recent USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll shows Biden slightly trailing Trump 39%-37% due to a lack of support among key demographics. When specific candidates are named, Trump’s lead advances slightly.

Shrinking support for Biden among his base voters indicates the daunting political challenge the president faces for re-election. Michelle Derr, a Democrat who plans to vote for Biden, expressed disappointment over the repetition of “two old white guys” in the race.

Black voter support for Biden has declined from 87% in 2020 to 63% today. He also lags among Hispanic voters by 5 percentage points, a decline from his 2-to-1 lead against Trump in 2020. Trump also leads among voters under 35, a group that broadly supported Biden in 2020.

Despite his struggles, Biden could be heartened by the fact that a significant number of his supporters have shifted towards third-party candidates rather than his competitor. One-fifth of Hispanic and Black voters, and 21% of young voters, now indicate they’ll support a candidate other than the two main contenders.

Trump Maintains Support Despite Legal Challenges

While Trump faces legal battles, including charges of attempting to overthrow a legitimate election, these issues have not significantly impacted his political support. James Traylor, a Republican-leaning independent stated, “Donald Trump, he has integrity,” and he would vote for Trump over Biden.

Entering the election year, Trump is gaining increased control of the GOP nomination contest, boasting a narrow lead over Biden in the general election and the support of 62% of likely Republican primary voters.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ Struggles

As Biden faces difficulties in securing support among key demographics, Vice President Kamala Harris also struggles to gain approval. Despite her potential appeal to younger and diverse voters, Harris receives lower job approval ratings than Biden among both Black voters and voters under 35.

Furthermore, Biden’s overall job approval rating stands at 39% approval, 58% disapproval. Harris’ own job approval rating is lower, with 33% approval and 57% disapproval.

As the election year continues, both Biden and Harris will need to address these challenges and reconnect with their base in order to secure their political futures.
