Concordia University To Host Town Halls Amid Financial Instability, Job Cuts Likely

Following reports of financial instability and possible job cuts, Concordia University is set to hold two town halls for students, faculty, and staff, announced days after.

These town halls will be held at the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, on the university’s Ann Arbor campus, one for students on February 18 and another for faculty and staff on February 19, according to a university email.

President Eric Ankerberg emailed students on February 13 about the financial issues affecting both the Ann Arbor university and its sister institution in Wisconsin. Ankerberg and his team will provide explanations and presentations at the town halls, university spokeswoman Kali Theil shared.

The town hall meetings aim to clarify the university’s current fiscal problems to students and employees, Theil communicated.

She added that they are getting numerous inquiries and responses that present a range of emotions and views. They are ensuring those who need help are receiving the necessary resources.

The town halls will be closed to media in order to maintain a safe environment for campus community interaction, Theil noted. The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session with Ankerberg and his staff.

The financial issues were uncovered after a comprehensive review of university finances on February 1, stated by university spokeswoman Lisa Lilijegren.

President Ankerberg informed the campuses that staff cuts and asset sales are likely to be approved by the university’s Board of Regents.

The regents’ meeting to approve the financial plan will be held on February 29, Lilijegren announced.

Despite record enrollment in fall 2022 and recent growth at the Wisconsin campus, Concordia’s financial problems persist.

The Ann Arbor campus, established in 1963, is marked by landmarks like the Earhart Manor and a distinctive red-and-white barn that serves as the university’s billboard.
