TL/DR –

Neel Ghoshal, born to Indian immigrants in the US, is driven by the tragic loss of his mother due to a lack of access to proper healthcare in launching his new venture, Healthpitality, in January. Ghoshal’s mother visited India in 1991 and died due to a misdiagnosis resulting from a disconnect between doctors and lack of healthcare access. Healthpitality aims to address the healthcare disparity by providing a membership-based alternative to traditional health insurance, and will primarily rely on telehealth services for hospitality employees who do not receive health insurance from their employers.

Neel Ghoshal’s Life Altered by Family Tragedy

Neel Ghoshal’s life took a drastic turn at the age of 13. Born and raised in the Northeastern United States by Sam and Pritha Ghoshal, Indian immigrants, he experienced moments of struggle yet a generally good life in the New York City area.

In 1991, Ghoshal’s mother traveled back to India to visit her father but tragically never returned. She had been battling a kidney condition which, due to miscommunication between doctors and inadequate healthcare access, was misdiagnosed leading to her untimely death in 1992.

Ghoshal’s Drive to Reform Healthcare

Ghoshal experienced anger towards the medical systems that failed his mother. “There was no reason she had to pass,” he stated, attributing her death to the lack of access to proper healthcare. Over the years, Ghoshal’s professional paths varied, but his drive to address the gaps in the healthcare system remained constant. This, combined with his family’s ties to the hospitality industry, inspired his new business venture, Healthpitality.

Inspiration Behind Healthpitality

Ghoshal founded Healthpitality with his mother’s memory in mind, recognizing that many U.S. citizens, particularly hospitality workers, struggle to access affordable healthcare. Even those who have traditional health insurance often face long wait times and high copays, making regular visits to primary care physicians challenging.

Launching in January, Healthpitality offers a membership-based alternative to regular health insurance. It will heavily employ telehealth services to cater to hospitality employees — over 50 percent of whom nationally do not receive health benefits from their employers. Ghoshal envisions Healthpitality as a platform where hospitality industry members receive the “VIP treatment” in healthcare that they provide to their guests night after night.
