Josh A. Cassada is an American physicist, test pilot, and NASA astronaut with an impressive background and a passion for space exploration. In this article, we will explore his early life, education, military career, and his contributions to NASA’s space missions.

Early Life and Education

Josh Aaron Cassada, born on July 18, 1973, in San Diego, California, and raised in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, has always had a fascination with the cosmos. He embarked on his academic journey by earning a Bachelor of Arts in physics from Albion College in 1995. During his time at Albion College, he was a member of the Sigma Chi Alpha Pi Chapter Fraternity.

Continuing his pursuit of knowledge, Cassada attended the University of Rochester, where he obtained a Master of Arts and a doctorate in physics in 1997 and 2000, respectively. His research at the University of Rochester focused on high-energy particle physics, and he actively contributed to research conducted at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

Military Career

After completing his graduate studies, Josh Cassada decided to serve his country by joining the United States Navy as a naval officer in 2000. He undertook flight training in 2001 and became a P-3 Orion pilot in VP-8 at NAS Brunswick in 2002. Cassada’s dedication to his military duties was evident as he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, and even participated in humanitarian efforts, such as Operation Unified Assistance following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

In 2006, Cassada graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and went on to become a test pilot for P-3 Orion and P-8 Poseidon aircraft at NAS Patuxent River. His roles included serving as the P-8A Airworthiness Project Officer and instructing as a test pilot for T-38 Talon and T-6 Texan aircraft. In 2011, he took on a different challenge by working for the Defense Contract Management Agency at Boeing in Seattle, Washington. There, he managed operations and contracts for various aircraft programs, including the P-8 Poseidon, KC-46 Pegasus, E-3 Sentry, and the US Marine Corps UAV programs.

Outside of his military service, Cassada co-founded Quantum Opus, a superconducting instrument manufacturing company, alongside two of his Albion College classmates.

NASA Career

In 2013, Josh Cassada achieved a significant milestone in his career when he was selected to join NASA Astronaut Group 21. His rigorous training and dedication led to his graduation from the program in July 2015. During his time at NASA, Cassada served as a CAPCOM, providing critical support for International Space Station operations, and played an essential role in the development of the Orion and Commercial Crew programs.

In August 2018, Cassada, along with fellow astronaut Sunita Williams, was initially selected to fly on CTS-1, which was set to be the first operational flight of Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft. However, due to delays in the Starliner’s development, Cassada was reassigned to SpaceX’s Crew-5 flight, continuing his dedication to advancing human space exploration.
