Marquette’s Masonic Building Under New Ownership

TL/DR –

Rusty and Staci Northrup are the new owners of Marquette’s historic Masonic Building, which was constructed in 1939 and has housed various institutions including the Marquette Opera House and retail establishments like Montgomery Ward and Woolworth’s. Although the Masonic organizations still use the top floor, the Northrups rent out the large spaces for events and receptions, and the fully occupied retail space includes a diverse range of businesses. The new owners are making upgrades to the building, including installation of a new boiler and air-conditioner, and have plans for seasonal events like a Halloween ‘haunted mall’ and a Christmas ‘Festival of Trees’.

The Marquette Masonic Building Under New Ownership

The iconic Masonic Building in downtown Marquette is now under new ownership by Rusty and Staci Northrup. While the Masons, original owners since 1927, continue to meet in their temple on the top floor, the rest of the building is being put to good use by the new owners.

More Than Just A Space for Rent

Constructed in 1939 after a fire destroyed its 1890 predecessor, the Masonic Building was home to the Marquette Opera House for many years. Now, the new owners not only lease the building to various retail establishments, but also rent it out for weddings, receptions, and performances when not in use by the Masons.

A Popular Destination

According to Rusty Northrup, the retail space in the building, which spans 65,000 square feet, is fully rented. “All we have open are a few offices. As soon as a space opens, it’s rented,” he said. Notable tenants include Sweet Marquette, a candy store, and Inkwell Tattoo.

Maintaining Comfort and Convenience

The Northrups are upgrading some systems in the Masonic Mall, ensuring the comfort of shoppers. A new air conditioner and a new boiler are set to be installed in May and June respectively. They also highlighted the convenient, covered parking available at the back door.

Looking Ahead

Aside from the practicalities, the Northrups are already planning holiday decorations and events including a ‘haunted mall’ for Halloween and a Festival of Trees for Christmas. “We have lots of ideas, but we’ve only had the building for a few months,” they added.

Additional Ventures

The Northrups, alongside partners Sam and Robin Garro, also own Marquette Fence Company and Northarrow, a real estate firm with numerous apartment buildings. They also juggle raising their 7-year-old twins.
