TL/DR –

Warren Wilson College will become a pet-friendly campus for the first time in the fall semester of 2024. Cats, dogs, reptiles, and fish will be allowed in dorm rooms throughout the academic year. The change, hoped to improve stress relief, morale, and enrollment numbers, comes after discussions about allowing all animals on campus began in fall 2023.

Warren Wilson College to become pet-friendly

Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina is set to welcome more than just students this fall. The college opens its doors to pets for the first time starting 2024 fall semester.

Cats, dogs, reptiles, and fish will now have the opportunity to accompany their owners and reside in dorm rooms throughout the academic year. This decision follows discussions that began in fall 2023 about extending pet allowances beyond emotional-support animals.

“Our students appreciate the idea of a campus teeming with pets,” said VP of Enrollment, Bob Nesmith. He expressed optimism that the presence of pets would not only relieve student stress, but also enhance campus morale.

“Many students may not want a pet due to responsibilities, but being around animals can be exciting and comforting,” said Nesmith. He also hopes that the pet-friendly policy will lead to an increase in enrollment numbers.
