Why Haven’t You Gotten Your Real ID Yet?

TL/DR –

The enforcement of REAL ID, a set of security requirements for identification cards in the US, will start on May 7, 2025. This comes after the federal government delayed it by two years, providing more time for residents to obtain compliant ID cards. Federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration, will still accept non-compliant ID cards until the enforcement date, and enhanced IDs or passports can also be used for travel.

Updated REAL ID Enforcement for Air Travel

Planning to fly for an upcoming spring break or graduation? You’ll need something more than a regular driver’s license to board the aircraft. REAL ID enforcement will commence on May 7, 2025, as per the federal government’s announcement.

The implementation was delayed by two years, allowing citizens additional time to acquire ID cards compliant with the enhanced security measures. The Washington State Department of Licensing also experienced the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a reduced number of people renewing licenses and a declining staff count leading to substantial backlogs in applications.

State ID and REAL ID Acceptance

Up until May 7, 2025, federal agencies like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will continue accepting state ID cards and other non-REAL ID compliant forms of identification. “Don’t postpone until next year,” warns DOL Director Marcus Glasper. “If you’re considering obtaining an enhanced driver’s license or ID card, I urge you to do so promptly. The queues at driver’s licensing offices will only get longer as we approach the May 7, 2025 deadline.”

Cost of Enhanced ID and Other Options

The initial Enhanced ID (EID) fee is $97 and is valid for six years. An eight-year EID can be obtained for $129. Alternatively, you can fly with a $130 passport. “The extension will allow states the necessary time to ensure their residents can secure a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card,” stated Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “During this period, we will also work on innovations to streamline the process and make it more accessible.”

Identification Requirements and Minor Travel

REAL ID compliant cards are marked with stars. Even if your card expires on the day of your travel, you can still fly. Minors under 18 don’t need a REAL ID as long as they’re traveling with someone who possesses one, states the TSA.
