Group urges school AC upgrades, cites Inflation Act funds

TL/DR –

The Amanecer People’s Project, a local advocacy group in El Paso, Texas, has been pushing for improvements in the cooling systems of local schools. The group’s organizer, Matthew Rodriguez, has identified 19 schools that are still using outdated swamp coolers, with the majority being part of the El Paso Independent School District. The group is advocating for the use of federal funds, such as those from the inflation reduction act, to facilitate upgrades to refrigerated air conditioning units, which they argue are essential for learning and working conditions, especially in high temperatures.

El Paso Group Advocates for Refrigerated Air in Schools

The Amanecer People’s Project, a local advocacy group based in El Paso, Texas, is pushing for improvements to the ongoing issue of inadequate air conditioning in school districts. The group emphasizes that refrigerated air is crucial for optimal learning conditions, especially during periods of high temperatures.

The group’s organizer, Matthew Rodriguez, stresses their goals to promote clean air and water and provide a voice for local residents. The group’s growing concern arose due to many schools continuing to operate with swamp coolers instead of refrigerated air. Notably, 19 schools, primarily within the El Paso Independent School District, are reportedly still using swamp coolers.

Rodriguez acknowledges some school districts are making efforts to upgrade outdated AC units. He points out that federal funding can help address these issues. “The inflation reduction act, which provides federal money specifically for school upgrades and solarization, along with tax rebates and grants, can be leveraged,” states Rodriguez.

Amanecer People’s Project is committed to aiding schools, distributing informational flyers to keep parents informed and encouraging community engagement. A public meeting is scheduled for June 22.

The Socorro and Ysleta School Districts have reportedly resolved the issue, and the Superintendent of EPISD states that while it can’t be fixed overnight, it is a priority. Despite the passage of the largest bond in 2016, there are still 20 schools in the district requiring AC upgrades.

A representative from Canutillo’s District reported that all their schools now have refrigerated air, with plans to replace units using funds from the latest bond. Anthony ISD revealed that despite not having refrigerated air in three locations, they run their units overnight to maintain cooler temperatures during the day.
