TL/DR –

Senator Joe Manchin urged President Biden to shift his energy policy messaging and highlight his achievements to garner better success. Manchin, who is an architect of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), stated that the US is producing more energy than ever and suggested that Biden should take credit for making the country “energy secure”. Manchin also advised Biden to inform Americans on how the IRA has changed domestic energy production and paid down $230 billion of debt.

Manchin Urges Biden to Reframe Energy Policy Messaging

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) advised President Biden to amend his energy policy communication on Tuesday. Manchin contends that highlighting his successful energy policies could enhance Biden’s popularity.

As a key player in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Manchin believes that Biden should take more credit for the law’s impact on domestic energy production.

“We’re generating more energy today than any other time in US history. We are the world’s leading energy producer,” Manchin stated at the Axios What’s Next Summit. He emphasized, “We are energy secure.”

Manchin criticized Biden for not publicly acknowledging the IRA’s success in reducing $230 billion of debt.

Biden’s IRA communication has primarily underscored the bill’s green energy aspects and his administration’s climate change battle. Manchin argued that Biden’s messaging leans too far left, reflecting on their shared work in the Senate.

“You’re always in the center, making the deal. Now, you’re far left where there’s no deal to be made,” he said of Biden. He warned that this could make it challenging for Biden to win over the majority, the center-left.

Manchin emphasized that the US wants energy and cleaner energy production, boasting that the country leads in oil, gas, wind, and solar production.

“We’re doing it all now,” he concluded. “Take credit for that.”

These statements follow an op-ed Manchin wrote in The Washington Post on Monday, where he once more urged Biden to take pride in his energy accomplishments.
