Mesa, AZ – Valley High School Students Face Fears at Local Leadership Academy
This week in Mesa, Arizona, dozens of brave high school students overcame their anxiety by rappelling off a 6-story tall tower. Excited participant, Kateri Firethunder, remarked, “I’m feeling amazing, it’s so fun,” as she attended the Mesa Police Youth Leadership Academy.
Learning Opportunities at the Youth Academy
At the Youth Leadership Academy, the students gained knowledge on important topics such as substance abuse and distracted driving, while simultaneously developing leadership and job skills. Firethunder commented, “I’ve been meeting new people and talking to everybody; it’s super fun.”
Mesa Police Reaches Out to Youth
The youth academy is part of a larger initiative by the Mesa Police Department to engage with the youth of the community. Through these programs, students develop a rapport with local law enforcement while enhancing their personal and professional development.
Application of Skills Learned
Firethunder and her peers intend to apply the skills and knowledge they acquired at the academy in their everyday lives. Mesa Police Department offers several other programs throughout the year such as life skills and sports, open to students regardless of their residential location.
