The Grand Rapids Victim Services Coordinator, Clorrisa Novak, has highlighted the importance of families focusing on their mental health following a tragedy. Novak advises those affected by such events to seek support, particularly in the immediate aftermath, and to utilize resources available for financial and grief assistance. She also suggests designating a contact person to manage communications following a death, to help reduce overwhelm for the grieving family.

Dealing with Tragedy: Mental Health and Support in Grand Rapids

As tragedies continue to impact families in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the focus for victims of such catastrophic incidents should be on mental health, according to Victim Services Coordinator Clorrisa Novak.

Following an unexpected loss, families often grapple with numerous unanticipated preparations. “It feels like the world is crumbling. No-one is ever ready for such a loss”, says Novak.

Denise Yon, a mother who tragically lost her daughter Willow in a horrifying car accident, urges that the critical window of support is immediately after the incident. “You can’t feel anything in the first 48 hours, yet you’re forced to make decisions,” she shares.

So, how should one navigate the aftermath of a sudden, tragic loss? Novak’s advice: Survive the first day. Support can come from her team who provide resources for financial aid and grief counseling.

“Our team comes packed with information on things like grief counselling, financial assistance, and checklists for funeral home requirements,” Novak explains. They also assist with document preparation for funeral arrangements or investigations in case it is crime-related.

Novak further counsels on setting boundaries with contacts following the death and even recommends designating a contact person. This can help manage overwhelming outreach during a difficult time.

Victim services similar to Novak’s are available at the local, county, and state level outside of Grand Rapids. These services are always accessible, even if victims are initially not ready to engage.
