This unique narrative springs to life in the eerie town of Port Republic, where young strangers find comfort in a role-playing game, haunted by a lurking darkness and their own buried truths.

Bards & Beasts, a story of enduring ties and the courage required to face the mysteries that lie beyond the veil, explores the impact of loss that resonates through flesh, bone, and time. The characters struggle with their haunting past, questioning whether their childhood sanctuary has turned into a waking nightmare, or whether they are haunted by their own fears.

In the midst of tech week leading up to the opening of B&B on April 19th, we caught up with Perovich. He shared his insights into the creation of the play, its intimate themes, and the exploration of darker aspects of human nature. Perovich, who draws inspiration from his love for darker stories and creators like David Lynch, explains how he balances the unsettling nature of his narrative with authentic character portrayals.

Perovich’s play navigates around the intensity of human interactions, the power of the subconscious, and the captivating world of the fantastical. The creator’s emphasis on making the fantastical elements feel “real” and “special” enhances the depth of the play, ensuring they illuminate the core themes rather than overshadowing them.

Throughout the creation process, Perovich has empathized deeply with his characters, enabling him to successfully capture their thoughts, fears, dreams, and desires. Despite the heavy themes, he manages to maintain his own emotional balance, thus ensuring a steady creative output. The play leaves lingering questions and unresolved feelings, meant to provoke reflection and discussion among the audience.

Perovich reveals that the dialogue and the interactions between characters in Bards & Beasts are rooted in personal experiences, making them feel more authentic. He also speaks about how the creation of this play has encouraged him to continue exploring the genres of science fiction, horror, and mystery through his narrative.

Bards & Beasts, produced by Brelby Productions, is scheduled for April 19-21 & 26-28, 2024, at the Metropolitan Arts Institute in Phoenix. Find more information and secure your tickets here.
