The Learning Experience in Grand Rapids Encourages Giving Back Year-Round

While the holiday season is often associated with charitable acts, The Learning Experience preschool in Grand Rapids, Michigan, emphasizes the importance of giving back throughout the year.

Teaching more than just the ABCs and 123s, educators like Mandy Cebelak work to instill a sense of generosity in their young students. “We can really have a conversation about how to help and be thankful,” Cebelak explains.

The preschool often collaborates with local community centers, shelters, and charitable organizations such as Make-A-Wish.

“We teach our children about donating—giving of our time and resources to assist those less fortunate,” says Center Leader Rachael Reynolds. Reynolds uses characters like “Grace” and “Charity” to illustrate these values. “Our slogan for Grace and Charity is that it’s the size of your heart that matters,” she clarifies.

For Thanksgiving, the preschoolers crafted place mats for local seniors, delivering them to a neighboring nursing home. The children gain excitement knowing their efforts make others feel cared for, Reynolds notes.

The Learning Experience aims to instill a lasting spirit of generosity in its students. Curriculum Leader David Fowler has noticed students already helping each other in small ways around the classroom. The school hopes that these early experiences of giving will lead to greater acts of kindness in the future.
