Ishpeming Churches Revive Good Friday Cantata Tradition After Two Decades
Christians worldwide are marking Good Friday, with an exciting revival happening in Ishpeming, Michigan. The historic tradition of performing a cantata on this holy day by Ishpeming churches has been reintroduced after a hiatus of over 20 years.
Bethel, Bethany, Trinity, and Faith ELCA Lutheran churches of Ishpeming collectively reinstated the tradition. This year, a community choir accompanied by a 10-piece orchestra executed Mary McDonald’s Tenebrae cantata, “It is Finished”.
The event organizers expressed pleasure in uniting the churches to commemorate the holiday collectively. Lucas Wickstrom, the director of music at Bethel Lutheran Church, underlined the significance of community and mutual support during such occasions.
Bethel’s Easter service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday, promising an engaging experience with a low brass band and handbells.
