Northern Michigan University held a unique event known as the Lavender Graduation to honor its LGBTQ+ graduates. The lavender hue, as explained by Sarah Shad of the Student Equity and Engagement Center (SEEC), has historical significance related to LGBTQ+ empowerment and pride.
Shad recounted, “During a 1969 ‘gay power’ march in New York, lavender was worn to commemorate the Stonewall riots. Today, these cords honor our LGBTQ+ graduates, symbolizing their strength, pride, and sense of community.”
Shelby Boggs, Vice President of the Native American Student Association, delivered a land acknowledgment, emphasizing the significance of this gesture in acknowledging the land’s spirit and the existence of Indigenous peoples who respect sexual orientation and gender identity diversity.
Shelby Goode of the Queers & Allies student club urged the audience to value self-exploration, stating, “Self-discovery is a daunting process that ultimately cultivates inner peace and authenticity. Our graduates have accomplished this while managing the challenges of college life.”
Q&A leaders Avery Zahlmann and Miranda Miller highlighted progress within their organization, such as establishing an annual drag show and revitalizing Queer Prom. They also acknowledged the strong bonds formed among the group’s members.
SEEC’s Sonny Pilto dedicated their speech to those lost to violence against the LGBTQ+ community in the past year, appreciating areas at NMU that fostered an environment of acceptance.
Keynote speaker Emily Bachman, an NMU Network Operations Center programmer and LGBTQ+ advocate, recognized the courage and advocacy within the queer community, encouraging the graduates to approach future endeavors with the same tenacity that led them to this stage.
