University of Nebraska–Lincoln Students Awarded NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded 2024 Graduate Research Fellowships to two graduate students from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The fellowships are part of NSF’s initiative to strengthen and diversify the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States.

The NSF fellowships recognize and support outstanding students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based graduate degrees at accredited U.S. institutions. They provide a $37,000 stipend, a $12,000 education allowance for three years, and professional development opportunities.

2024 NSF Fellowship Recipients

Doctoral candidate Sophia Stockham, from Wauseon, Ohio, is studying political science under Alice Kang. Stockham, a Bowling Green State University graduate, focuses her research on human rights and women’s representation. She will use the NSF funding to support research on informed consent laws for pelvic exams.

Xavier Ovalle, a master’s student at the School of Biological Sciences’ Hebets Lab, conducts research on invertebrate groups under Eileen Hebets’ mentorship. Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Ovalle, a first-generation college graduate, studied biology at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. His NSF-funded research will continue to explore the color-changing process in the crab spider Misumenoides formosipes.

Political science doctoral student Zeenat Ahmed received an honorable mention.
