A Phoenix local, Jonathan Alexander Estrella, faces arrest over kidnapping and sex assault charges

A Phoenix resident, Jonathan Alexander Estrella, was arrested on April 18, on charges of kidnapping and sex assaults in relation to two incidents. One incident allegedly occurred over 10 years ago while the other happened more recently. Detailed court documents shed light on Estrella’s alleged actions.

Identity of the suspect

The suspect, identified in court documents as 50-year-old Jonathan Alexander Estrella, is a Fire Engineer with the Phoenix Fire Department according to a department statement.

Investigations link Estrella to two incidents involving three women. The first incident took place on October 13, 2006, involving an adult woman who met Estrella at work. After consuming numerous alcoholic beverages at a bar, the woman blacked out and woke up in Estrella’s bed where he allegedly was engaging in a sexual act on her. Despite victim’s discomfort, Estrella admitted having sex with the victim and expressed regret for his actions. Despite the victim filing a complaint and providing evidence, the case was not prosecuted by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office at the time.

Second incident

The second incident, as per police officials, occurred over 17 years later at a bar near Camelback Road and Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway in the West Valley. Two victims were involved in this incident. Both women reported being trapped in Estrella’s vehicle and subjected to unwanted sexual advances. The second victim alleged Estrella provided her with cocaine, touched her inappropriately, and used force resulting in bruises. The assault ended when the victim answered an incoming call from her concerned friends. Both victims are Estrella’s co-workers and work directly with his spouse.

Estrella turned himself in to police on April 18 following a grand jury warrant issued on April 16. He declined to be interviewed but sent apology messages to both victims via Instagram after the incidents.

Estrella’s charges

Estrella is accused of two counts of sexual assault (A.R.S. 13-1406A), two counts of kidnapping (A.R.S. 13-1304A3), and two counts of attempted sexual abuse (A.R.S 13-1404A).

A judge set Estrella’s bond at $75,000. If he makes bond, he’ll be subjected to electronic monitoring and curfew restrictions. The Phoenix Fire Department, aware of the allegations and arrest, has placed Estrella on administrative leave, stating that they take allegations against their members seriously.
